Sri Lanka or Vietnam? How to choose
Vietnam is long, loud and full of cities and street food. Sri Lanka is compact, green and slower. Both are great value. The right one depends mostly on how long you have and what you want to do all day.

The short answer
- Vietnam is about 1,650 km from north to south. Seeing the highlights properly takes two to three weeks and at least one internal flight.
- Sri Lanka fits its highlights into one loop of 7 to 10 days by road, with no flights.
- Vietnam wins on cities, street food and travelling cheaply by bus and train. Sri Lanka wins on wildlife, ancient sites and an easy pace.
- Weather splits differently: Vietnam's north is cold in winter, while Sri Lanka always has one coast in season.

Choose Vietnam if you love cities and food
Vietnam's best moments tend to happen at a plastic table on a pavement. A bowl of pho at 7am in Hanoi, bun cha at lunch, a banh mi from a cart. If food is the main reason you travel, Vietnam is one of the best countries in the world for it, and you'll eat brilliantly for very little.
It's also easy to travel independently. Trains run the length of the country, sleeper buses connect almost everywhere and flights between Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City are cheap and frequent. Backpackers can move around for very little, and the route from north to south (or the reverse) is so well worn that planning is simple.
The catch is the size. Vietnam is long and thin, and travellers who try to see all of it in ten days usually spend too much of it in transit. With less than two weeks, pick the north or the centre and south, not both.
Choose Sri Lanka if you want variety without the rush
Sri Lanka is the size of Ireland, but its landscapes change every couple of hours. You can wake up below the Sigiriya rock fortress, be in cool tea country by evening and on a beach two days later. Nothing needs a flight. For a 10-day holiday, that's the big advantage.
It's also stronger on nature. Few places in Asia let you see leopards, wild elephants and blue whales on the same trip. And because the island is small, a driver can build a route around exactly what you want without wasting days on the road.
1Hill country
Plan it with GoTourRideElla and the hill country
Ella is the Sapa of Sri Lanka: cool, green and full of walks. The hike to Ella Rock takes 2 to 3 hours return, and the views back across the gap to the plains are worth the early start. Go before 8am, before the cloud comes in.
- 2–3 hour hike
- Start early
2Cultural Triangle
Plan it with GoTourRidePolonnaruwa by bicycle
An ancient royal city spread over a few kilometres of parkland. The best way to see it is by bicycle, ending at the Gal Vihara, four Buddhas carved from a single granite rock face in the 12th century.
- UNESCO site
- Half a day
3South
Plan it with GoTourRideElephants at Udawalawe
If you want the best chance of seeing wild elephants, Udawalawe is it. The park is open grassland around a reservoir, so herds are easy to spot all year. It sits neatly between the hills and the south coast.
- Elephants all year
- Half-day safari
Weather: the part people get wrong
Vietnam has three climates. The north (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa) is cool and often grey from December to February, sometimes down to 10°C. The centre (Hoi An, Hue, Da Nang) has its rainy season from about September to December. The south is dry from December to April. Getting the whole country in perfect weather is almost impossible, so most people accept one region being less than ideal.
Sri Lanka has two monsoons that hit opposite sides of the island. From December to April the south, west and hills are at their best. From May to September the east coast and the ancient cities are. There is no month when the whole island is wet.
Which is cheaper?
Vietnam is a little cheaper day to day, especially for backpackers on buses and in hostels. Sri Lanka's bigger costs are entry tickets to the main sites, which are priced for foreign visitors, and transport, because most people hire a car and driver.
For two or more people, the driver often costs less than you'd expect. It averages about $66 a day for the whole vehicle on GoTourRide, shared between everyone in the car, and it replaces trains, buses and taxis.

Questions people ask
Is Sri Lanka more expensive than Vietnam?
Slightly, mostly because of entry tickets to the big sites and the cost of a private driver. Food and accommodation are similar. For couples and families, sharing a driver keeps Sri Lanka good value.
Can I visit Sri Lanka and Vietnam in one trip?
Yes, but there are usually no direct flights, so you'll connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok. It works best with three weeks or more.
Which is better for a first trip to Asia?
Both are good. Vietnam is easier on public transport and has more travellers to meet. Sri Lanka is easier to see in a short holiday and feels calmer, especially with a driver.
Which has better beaches, Sri Lanka or Vietnam?
Sri Lanka's beaches are quieter and you can always find one in season. Vietnam has good beaches around Da Nang, Hoi An and Phu Quoc, but the coast is more built up.
