Travel Times Between Different Places in Sri Lanka: Distances, Drive Times and Route Planner (2026)
Sri Lanka looks small on a map, but travel times between different places in Sri Lanka are longer than most visitors expect. Roads are narrow and winding, towns run into each other and the average speed is only about 40 km/h.
This guide gives you realistic distances and drive times for the routes tourists use most, compared across car, train and bus, plus rules of thumb, best departure times and sample itineraries so you can plan days that are achievable.
Times are approximate and assume daytime travel by car in normal conditions. Use them to plan, and ask a local driver to confirm your exact route.

Why travel times in Sri Lanka are longer than they look
Distances in kilometres are misleading in Sri Lanka. Many main roads pass through the centre of towns and villages, with slow vehicles, buses stopping at every junction, tuk-tuks, pedestrians and stray dogs. Mountain roads in the hill country wind constantly, and heavy rain can slow traffic further.
The most common planning mistake is underestimating this. A route that looks like 100 km (about an hour in Europe) often takes 2.5 to 3 hours. Expressways and a few newer highways are the exception, and we cover them below.
Rule of thumb for travel times in Sri Lanka
- Plan on an average of 40 km/h on normal roads. In the north and east roads are often a little faster, up to around 50 km/h.
- Expressways are much faster, and cut some journeys by half or more.
- Add 30 to 60 minutes around Colombo, Kandy and Galle at rush hour.
- Add time for stops: viewpoints, tea factories, toilet breaks and lunch can add 1 to 2 hours to a long transfer.
- Keep to one big transfer per day (more than about 3 hours of driving) and avoid driving after dark.

The Cultural Triangle is compact, which makes it a good place to travel slowly: you can see Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa from one base without long days in the car. See the Dambulla guide for details on visiting the cave temples.
Travel times in the hill country
| Route | Approx. distance | By car | By train / bus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kandy to Nuwara Eliya | ~80 km | 2.5 to 3 hours | Train to Nanu Oya about 4 to 5 hours |
| Kandy to Hatton | 70 km | About 2.5 hours | About 3 hours by train |
| Hatton to Nuwara Eliya | 40 km | About 1.25 hours | Bus |
| Nuwara Eliya to Ella | ~60 km | 2 to 3 hours | Train (from Nanu Oya) about 2.75 hours |
| Kandy to Ella | 137 km | 4.5 to 6 hours | About 6.5 to 7 hours by train |
| Ella to Haputale | ~25 km | About 1 hour | About 50 min by train |
The Kandy to Ella train is one of the world's most scenic rail journeys, and many travellers choose to do it by train even though it is slower than a car. Seats on the popular daytime trains are limited, so reserve ahead in high season. Your driver can meet you at Ella with your luggage.
Travel times to the south coast and safari parks
| Route | Approx. distance | By car |
|---|---|---|
| Ella to Yala (Tissamaharama) | 88 km | About 3 hours |

| Galle to Colombo | ~120 km | 1.5 to 2 hours by expressway |
Travel times to the east coast and the north
| Route | Approx. distance | By car |
|---|---|---|
| Sigiriya to Trincomalee | ~110 km | 2.5 to 3 hours |
| Ella to Arugam Bay | ~170 km | 4 to 5 hours |
| Arugam Bay to Gal Oya | ~70 km | About 2 hours |
| Anuradhapura to Jaffna | ~200 km | 4 to 5 hours |
| Anuradhapura to Wilpattu | ~65 km | About 1.5 hours |
| Jaffna to Mannar | ~150 km | 3.5 to 4 hours |
The east and north are long hauls from the usual tourist loop, which is why they stay quiet. See least traveled places in Sri Lanka for what to see once you arrive.
Car vs train vs bus: how the times compare
| Route | Car | Train / bus | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Negombo to Kandy | About 3 hours | 5 to 6 hours (train/bus combined) | Car is much faster |
| Kandy to Ella | 4.5 to 6 hours | About 6.5 to 7 hours by train | Take the train for the views |
| Ella to Tissamaharama | About 3 hours | About 4 hours by bus | Car is easier |
| Colombo to Galle | 1.5 to 2 hours | About 2.5 to 3 hours by train | Car or the coastal train for scenery |
| Airport to Colombo | About 1 hour | About 2.5 hours | Car or taxi |
Public transport is cheap and characterful, but not particularly easy for tourists with luggage. Buses are crowded, and connections often mean waiting. Most visitors use a private driver for the main route and the train for one or two special legs.
Expressways: where they save time
The Southern Expressway is the biggest time-saver. It cuts Colombo to Galle from around 3 hours on the old road to roughly an hour or so of driving, and extends on to Matara and further towards Hambantota, which makes the south coast very easy to reach from the airport.
The airport has its own expressway link to Colombo, and the Central Expressway towards Kandy is being built in stages, with sections already open and others still under construction. The north-south A9 road remains the main route to the Cultural Triangle and Jaffna. Because completion dates change, ask your driver which sections are currently open before you rely on an expressway time.
Best time of day and week to travel
- Start early. Leaving at 7 or 8 am avoids the worst traffic and gives you daylight for stops.
- Avoid Colombo and Kandy at rush hour (roughly 7:30 to 9:30 am and 4:30 to 7:30 pm).
- Watch public holidays and Poya days. Roads towards popular destinations are busy on Fridays and before long weekends, and New Year in April is especially busy.
- Avoid driving after dark on mountain roads and in rural areas because of poor lighting, animals and pedestrians.
- Check the weather. Heavy rain can slow the hill country and cause delays in the south-west in the wet season.
Sample itineraries based on real travel times
7 days: Cultural Triangle, hills and south
- Day 1: Airport to Sigiriya via Dambulla (about 4 hours).
- Day 2: Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, with a short drive between them.
- Day 3: Sigiriya to Kandy (2.5 to 3 hours), afternoon in Kandy.
- Day 4: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya via tea country (about 3 hours).
- Day 5: Nuwara Eliya to Ella by road or train.
- Day 6: Ella to Yala or Udawalawe (about 3 hours), safari in the afternoon.
- Day 7: Safari area to the south coast (3 to 4 hours), then Galle or Colombo (1.5 to 2 hours by expressway).
10 days: slower and with beach time
Spread the same route over 10 days by adding a second night in Kandy and Ella, a full day at Polonnaruwa or Dambulla, and 3 nights on the south coast. The longest transfers stay under about 4 hours.
14 days: with the east or north
Add 3 to 4 days for Trincomalee or Arugam Bay, or 4 to 6 days for Jaffna and the north, and plan one or two full travel days to get there. See our 3-week Sri Lanka itinerary for a complete plan.
Common mistakes when planning travel times
- Using kilometres as a guide instead of hours.
- Planning more than one long transfer a day.
- Trying to see Sigiriya, Kandy and Ella in two days.
- Starting a long drive right after a long-haul flight.
- Assuming expressway times apply to the whole route.
- Leaving no buffer before an international flight. Allow at least 4 to 5 hours between a long drive and your departure time.
How a driver helps with long transfers
A local driver knows the fastest road at each time of day, where to stop safely, how to avoid the worst traffic and which stretches to avoid after rain. You can relax, enjoy the view and decide on the spot to stop at a tea factory or temple. FAQs
How long does it take to drive between places in Sri Lanka?
Plan around an average of about 40 km/h on most roads. A 100 km journey commonly takes 2.5 to 3 hours. The expressways around Colombo, Galle and Matara are much faster, cutting the Colombo to Galle trip to roughly an hour or so.
How long is the drive from Colombo airport to Kandy?
Roughly 3 to 3.5 hours by car from Bandaranaike International Airport, depending on traffic around Kadawatha and on the Kandy road. Allow extra time on Fridays and public holidays.
How long does it take to travel from Kandy to Ella?
By car about 4.5 to 6 hours, depending on stops. The train takes around 6.5 to 7 hours but is considered one of the world's most scenic rail journeys, so many travellers take the train for this leg and a driver for the rest.
How long does it take to get from Colombo to Galle?
About 1 to 1.5 hours on the Southern Expressway, compared with 3 hours or more on the old coastal road. From the airport, add roughly 30 to 45 minutes to reach the expressway.
How far is Sigiriya from Kandy and Colombo?
Sigiriya is about 90 km from Kandy, a drive of roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, and about 175 km from Colombo, a drive of around 4 to 5 hours.
Is it realistic to see Sri Lanka in a short time?
Sri Lanka is small but slow to cross. The most common mistake is underestimating travel time. Plan no more than one major transfer a day and keep at least two nights in each base. With 7 days, choose two or three regions rather than trying to see the whole island.
Should I drive myself in Sri Lanka?
It is not recommended for most visitors. Traffic is dense, roads are narrow and winding, vehicles drive on the left and overtaking by buses is common. A local driver usually costs little more than the stress and risk of self-driving, and also knows the best road and stops for each leg.
What is the fastest way to travel between cities in Sri Lanka?
Car on the expressways for Colombo to the south and the airport links, and car or domestic flights for very long distances. Trains are slower than cars on most routes but are the best option on a few scenic stretches. Buses are cheapest but the slowest.
