Udawalawe National Park Safari Guide (2026): Jeep Tours, Costs, Hotels and Elephant Transit Home

Updated October 2026 · by the GoTourRide team

Udawalawe National Park is the most reliable place in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants. Its open grassland, compact size and location between the hill country and the south coast make it an easy, rewarding first safari, and a good alternative when Yala is closed or crowded.

This guide covers Udawalawe safari jeep tours, how much they cost, how to book, the best time to visit, the Elephant Transit Home, and where to stay, including larger properties such as Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort. For a comparison with other parks, see our best safari in Sri Lanka guide.

  • Great for families and first safaris. Short drives, flat terrain and a high success rate.
  • Less crowded than Yala, and jeeps and tickets are usually cheaper.

Udawalawe safari jeep tours: what to expect

Private cars are not allowed in the park, so you travel in a specially equipped safari jeep, usually with space for up to six people and a driver-tracker who knows the territory. Most visitors do a half-day safari of about three to four hours, starting at dawn or mid-afternoon. A full-day safari is possible, but the compact park means a half-day is usually enough.

Expect herds of elephants, water buffalo, crocodiles, spotted deer, mongoose, monitor lizards and many birds. Leopards and sloth bears live here but are rarely seen, so go for elephants.

Udawalawe safari cost

Fees are set by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, are revised yearly, and sources disagree on 2026 figures. Treat the following as a guide and ask for an all-inclusive total.

ItemTypical 2026 rangeNotes

All-in, shared half-dayAbout USD 60 to 80 per personIncludes entry and jeep when bundled
Save money: share a jeep, book locally through your hotel or driver rather than a prepaid online package (which is often pricier and harder to cancel), and avoid the Christmas and New Year weeks.

How to book a jeep

  1. Decide whether you want a morning or afternoon drive, and shared or private.
  2. Ask your hotel, driver or a local operator to arrange the jeep and tickets together.
  3. Confirm the pickup time and what the price includes (tickets, taxes, vehicle charge).
  4. Outside peak weeks, you can usually book a day ahead; in peak weeks book earlier.
  5. Bring cash for tips and any extras, and tip your tracker if the drive was good.

Best time to visit

  • December to March: animals gather around the water; popular and good for sightings.
  • May to September: the most reliable dry period, with clear skies.
  • Time of day: early morning or late afternoon beats midday heat; the park is hot throughout the year (average about 32 °C).

Elephant Transit Home

The Elephant Transit Home (ETH) cares for orphaned and injured elephant calves with the aim of returning them to the wild. Visitors can watch the calves at scheduled feeding times from a viewing area. It is roughly a 10 to 20 minute drive from the park entrance, so it is best treated as a short add-on before or after a safari.

Feeding times
Sources differ (one lists around 9 am, noon, 3 pm and 6 pm; another about 10:30 am, 2:30 pm and 6 pm). Confirm with your hotel or driver on the day
Quietest session
The evening feeding at about 6 pm is often described as quieter, though lighting may be dimmer
Entry fee
Check at the site; we could not confirm a reliable 2026 figure
Etiquette
No touching or feeding; stay on the viewing platform and keep your voice low

A common plan is a morning safari, a rest at your hotel, then an evening visit to the Transit Home.

Tips for your Udawalawe safari

  • Wear neutral colours, a hat and sunscreen, and bring water and binoculars.
  • Stay seated and quiet; never feed or crowd elephants, and keep your distance if a herd has calves.
  • Bring a zoom lens if you photograph wildlife.
  • Check the weather: heavy rain can affect tracks and make for a muddy drive.
  • Avoid elephant rides and other captive-animal attractions elsewhere on your trip.

Let a local driver handle the jeep, tickets and timing so you can focus on the animals. Browse licensed drivers on GoTourRide, or see our private driver checklist.
