Sri Lanka Safari Guide
Minneriya or Yala or Udawalawe? Which Sri Lanka Safari to Choose (2026)
Updated October 2026 · by the GoTourRide team
Short answer: pick Minneriya for the big elephant gathering (roughly July to October) when you are around Sigiriya, pick Yala if a leopard is your priority, and pick Udawalawe for reliable elephants all year, especially between Ella and the south coast.
This guide compares the three parks side by side, covers Minneriya National Park in detail (best time, Kaudulla, cost, hotels) and shows how to fit more than one into a trip. For the full list of parks, see our best safari in Sri Lanka guide.
The short answer
- Elephants in large numbers (July to October): Minneriya, with Kaudulla as the backup.
- Leopards: Yala, specifically Block 1 in the dry season.
- Elephants any month: Udawalawe.
- Your base is Sigiriya or Habarana: Minneriya or Kaudulla, 30 to 50 minutes away.
- Your base is Ella or the south coast: Udawalawe or Yala.
Minneriya, Yala and Udawalawe at a glance
| Minneriya | Yala | Udawalawe | |

| Main attraction | The Gathering: large herds at the reservoir | Leopards (and elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles) | Elephants, almost guaranteed |
| Best months | About June to October; peak August to September | About February to July | Good all year; best December to March |
| Region | Cultural Triangle (near Sigiriya, Habarana) | South-east (Tissamaharama) | South-central (between Ella and the coast) |
| Crowds | Busy in season, many jeeps at the waterline | High, especially Block 1 | Moderate |
| Best time of day | Late afternoon (about 3 to 6 pm) | Early morning and late afternoon | Early morning and late afternoon |
| Typical drive | About 3 hours | About 4 hours (half-day) | About 3 to 4 hours (half-day) |
| Closure | None annual; herds shift to Kaudulla at times | Blocks 1 and 2 close about a month (mid-September to mid-October in 2026) | Open all year |
Minneriya or Yala
This is the question many travellers ask, and the honest answer is that you are choosing between two different experiences. Minneriya is about numbers and spectacle: in the dry season, when the reservoir shrinks, elephants from the surrounding forest come to the exposed grassland to graze and drink, and herds of well over a hundred can be in sight at once. Yala is about chance and stealth: it has one of the highest known leopard densities in the world, but a sighting is never guaranteed and the best areas are crowded.
- Choose Minneriya if you want to see many elephants, if you are travelling between July and October, and if you are staying in or near Sigiriya.
- Choose Yala if a leopard is the main goal, you are in the south-east between February and July, and you accept crowds.
- Timing matters: from mid-September to mid-October Yala's main blocks are closed, while Minneriya is near its best. In 2026 that overlap makes Minneriya the easier choice for late September.
Read our Yala guide for how to book there, and Wilpattu or Yala if leopards are your main interest.
Minneriya or Udawalawe
Both are elephant parks. Udawalawe is the safer bet in months when the Minneriya gathering is not on, because its elephants are resident all year in open grassland. Minneriya is the better choice in the gathering season, when it offers far larger herds in a more dramatic setting.
| If... | Choose |
|---|---|
| You travel July to October and are near Sigiriya | Minneriya (or Kaudulla) |
| You travel November to June | Udawalawe, or Kaudulla if you are near Sigiriya |
| You are going from Ella to the south coast | Udawalawe, which is on the way |
| You have small children and want a short, easy drive | Udawalawe |
| You want the biggest herd in one place | Minneriya at the peak (August to September) |
See our Udawalawe guide for costs, hotels and the Elephant Transit Home.
Minneriya vs Kaudulla
Minneriya and Kaudulla share the same wandering herd, about 30 to 45 minutes apart by road. When water levels change, or the Minneriya tank floods (often from October to January), the elephants move to Kaudulla. Minneriya is the larger, better-known park, while Kaudulla is usually quieter.
Best time to visit Minneriya National Park
- Peak gathering
- August and September, when numbers are highest
- Wider window
- Roughly June to October (sources vary: some say May to October, others July to October)
- Time of day
- Late afternoon, about 3 to 6 pm, when elephants come to graze and the light is good
- After the season
- From about October to January the herd often shifts to Kaudulla
- Avoid
- Heavy rain, which breaks up the grassland and spreads the herds out
Outside the season, Minneriya still has elephants, deer, monkeys and birds, but the spectacle is smaller. See our best time to go to Sri Lanka guide for the whole island.

Hotels near Minneriya National Park
There are no hotels inside Minneriya, so people searching for "hotels in Minneriya National Park" end up in the towns nearby. The practical choices are:
| Base | Style | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Habarana | Hotels, eco-lodges, resorts | Closest to the park and the other safari parks (Kaudulla, Hurulu Eco Park) |
| Sigiriya | Everything from guesthouses to luxury villas | Best if you also want Sigiriya Rock and Pidurangala |
| Dambulla | Mid-range hotels and guesthouses | Good for the cave temple and a central position |
| Polonnaruwa | Guesthouses and mid-range hotels | Good if you are touring the ancient city as well |
Compare current prices and reviews on your booking site, and ask the hotel whether it can arrange the jeep and ticket for the late-afternoon drive.
Which one should you choose?
- Start with the month. July to October favours Minneriya; February to July favours Yala; December to March favours Udawalawe.
- Then check your route. Choose the park that is on the way, because a detour costs a day.
- Then pick the animal. Leopard means Yala, big herds mean Minneriya, easy elephants mean Udawalawe.
- Check closures. Yala's main blocks close mid-September to mid-October, so Minneriya or Udawalawe is the safer plan then.

FAQs
Minneriya or Yala: which is better?
They are for different animals. Choose Minneriya for the elephant gathering, when hundreds of elephants gather at the reservoir (best roughly July to October, peaking in August and September). Choose Yala for leopards. Minneriya also sits near Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle, while Yala is in the south-east near Ella and the south coast.
Minneriya or Udawalawe: which should I pick?
Udawalawe has elephants almost all year and is the better choice outside July to October. Minneriya is better during the gathering, when the numbers are far higher, and when you are already staying around Sigiriya or Habarana. Udawalawe is better if you are travelling between Ella and the south coast.
When is the best time to visit Minneriya National Park?
The dry season, roughly June to October, with the elephant gathering usually peaking in August and September. Sources differ slightly on the start, with some saying May or July. From about October to January the herds often move to Kaudulla when the Minneriya tank floods or water levels change.
What is the difference between Minneriya and Kaudulla?
They are about 30 to 45 minutes apart and the herd moves between them depending on water and grazing. Minneriya is larger and more famous; Kaudulla is usually quieter and takes over when Minneriya is flooded or dry. Many operators sell a combined 'Minneriya or Kaudulla' ticket so your guide can choose the park with the herd on the day.
How far is Minneriya from Sigiriya?
About 20 km, or roughly 30 to 50 minutes by jeep or car depending on the gate and road. Kaudulla is further, about 35 minutes or more. Habarana is the closest town and a convenient base for both.
How much does a Minneriya safari cost?
There is no single official figure, and operators disagree. Park tickets are commonly quoted at roughly USD 25 to 35 per adult plus a vehicle charge and tax. A half-day jeep is usually about LKR 7,500 to 10,000 for the vehicle, or around USD 50 to 70 per person in bundled offers. Private tours with entry tickets and hotel pickup can run about USD 70 to 120 per person. Ask for the all-inclusive total.
Where should I stay for Minneriya National Park?
Habarana and Sigiriya are the practical bases, with Dambulla and Polonnaruwa also within reach. Search 'hotels in Minneriya' and you will mostly find Habarana and Sigiriya lodges and eco-resorts, because the park itself has no hotels. Staying near the park saves time for the late-afternoon drive.
What time of day is best for the Minneriya safari?
Late afternoon, roughly 3 to 6 pm, when elephants come down to the reservoir to graze and drink and the light is best.
Can I see Minneriya, Yala and Udawalawe in one trip?
Yes, on a route of 10 days or more. Do Minneriya with the Cultural Triangle, Udawalawe on the way between Ella and the south coast, and Yala from Tissamaharama. Our best safari guide has sample itineraries.
