Wilpattu or Yala? Which Leopard Safari Is Better (Plus Wilpattu to Sigiriya)
Updated October 2026 · by the GoTourRide team
Short answer: choose Yala if your priority is seeing a leopard, and Wilpattu if you would rather have a wild, quiet park with fewer jeeps and can live with less predictable sightings. Both are excellent; they just deliver different experiences.
This comparison covers leopard odds, crowds, scenery, costs, season and routes, and also answers the common follow-up question: how far is Wilpattu from Sigiriya and is it a realistic day trip?
The short answer
- Best chance of a leopard: Yala (Block 1).
- Fewest jeeps and most wilderness: Wilpattu.
- Easiest on a south coast and Ella route: Yala.
- Easiest on a Cultural Triangle route (Sigiriya, Anuradhapura): Wilpattu.
- If you want guaranteed wildlife with little stress: consider Udawalawe instead of either.

Leopard chances
Most sources agree that Yala gives better odds. Tour operators' figures vary widely and are not independent, but one comparison puts Yala at roughly 70 percent per safari and Wilpattu at roughly 40 percent, while our best safari guide quotes guides' estimates of about 40 to 55 percent per drive at Wilpattu. Treat these as indications, not promises.
The reason is the terrain. In Yala's Block 1, leopards are habituated to jeeps and often rest on rocks and trees close to the track. In Wilpattu the forest is denser and leopards have a huge range, so even when you do see one it may be partly hidden by brush.
Crowds and atmosphere
This is where Wilpattu wins. In Yala Block 1 on a busy morning, dozens of jeeps can converge on one sighting, with engines running and people jostling for position. In Wilpattu you will usually share a sighting with only a few vehicles, and long stretches of the day pass without seeing another jeep.
If crowds are your main concern but you still prefer the south, Yala's quieter blocks (Block 5 is often mentioned) are an option, though sightings are less frequent. Read our Yala guide for the block breakdown.
Landscape and other wildlife
Wilpattu is known for its villus, natural lake-like basins ringed with sand that fill with water and attract elephants, deer and birds, set within forest and open glades. Many visitors say its landscape is the main reason to go, regardless of leopards. Yala is more varied in feel, with rocky outcrops, lagoons and coast, and you also see more elephants and crocodiles in the open.
Costs
Both parks charge a per-person permit, a vehicle charge and a jeep with a tracker. Sources quote permits at roughly USD 25 to 45 per foreign adult for Yala, and Wilpattu half-day packages commonly run about USD 55 to 75 per person (with bundles up to about USD 135 including extras). Yala's private half-day typically costs about USD 80 to 110 per person. Costs change, so ask for an all-inclusive quote.
The bigger cost difference is transport. Wilpattu from Sigiriya or Anuradhapura is short, while a standalone trip from the south coast is long. Match the park to your route and you will save both money and hours.
Best time to go
- Yala: roughly February to July. Blocks 1 and 2 close for about a month from mid-September (14 September to 15 October in 2026).
- Wilpattu: roughly February to October. The park is greener and muddier from about September to December.
- December: both are popular, and Yala is very busy around Christmas and New Year.
Route: which fits your itinerary?
| Your route | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ella, south coast, Galle | Yala | Natural stop; about 2.5 to 3 hours from Ella |
| Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, north | Wilpattu | About 2.5 to 3 hours from Sigiriya, close to Anuradhapura |
| Short trip, one safari only | Whichever sits on your route | A long detour costs a day |
| 10+ days, both sides of the island | Both, if leopards matter | They are on opposite sides, so only combine on a longer trip |

Putting them together, the road distance between Sigiriya and the Wilpattu area is about 115 to 140 km, and the realistic driving time is about 2.5 to 3 hours to the park entrance, passing via Anuradhapura. How to plan Wilpattu from Sigiriya
Option 1: day trip
- Leave around 3:30 to 4 am to reach the gate for the morning drive.
- Safari for about 4 hours, then lunch near the park.
- Return to Sigiriya in the afternoon. Expect roughly 5 to 6 hours in the car in total.
Option 2: overnight (recommended)
- Day 1: Sigiriya to Anuradhapura (sightseeing), then on to Wilpattu for an evening drive.

So which should you choose?
- Choose Yala if a leopard is the main goal, you are travelling Ella to the south coast, or it is your first safari and you want the highest odds.
- Choose Wilpattu if you dislike crowds, are already in the Cultural Triangle, and value atmosphere over guarantees.
- Choose neither if you mostly want elephants and a stress-free day: Udawalawe or Minneriya are easier.

FAQs
Wilpattu or Yala: which is better?
Yala if you want the best chance of a leopard and an easy route in the south. Wilpattu if you want fewer jeeps, a wilder landscape and are happy with less predictable sightings. For many travellers the deciding factor is the route: Yala sits near Ella and the south coast, Wilpattu near Anuradhapura and Sigiriya.
Are there more leopards in Yala or Wilpattu?
Yala Block 1 has one of the highest known leopard densities in the world, and sightings are more frequent there. Operators quote figures from roughly 40 to 55 percent per drive at Wilpattu and higher at Yala, but the numbers come from tour companies and vary by season. Wilpattu's dense forest makes leopards harder to see.
Is Wilpattu less crowded than Yala?
Yes, by a wide margin. On a busy morning Yala Block 1 can have dozens of jeeps at one sighting, while Wilpattu usually has a handful. Yala's quieter blocks (such as Block 5) are an alternative if you prefer the south.
How far is Wilpattu from Sigiriya?
About 115 to 140 km depending on the route and which gate you use, and roughly 2.5 to 3 hours of driving. A tour operator based in Sigiriya quotes about 2.5 hours. A day trip is possible but long, so start very early.
Can I do Wilpattu as a day trip from Sigiriya?
Yes, with an early start (around 4 am to be at the park for the morning drive) and a driver. You will spend roughly 5 to 6 hours in the car in total. Staying a night near Wilpattu is more relaxing, and it pairs well with Anuradhapura.
What is the best time to visit Wilpattu?
Roughly February to October, with the dry months best for sightings. The park is greener and muddier from about September to December.
Can I visit both Wilpattu and Yala on one trip?
Yes, but they are on opposite sides of the island, so only do both on a longer itinerary of 10 days or more. Most travellers pick one and add Udawalawe or Minneriya instead.
Which one is better for a first-time safari?
Udawalawe is easier than either, because elephants are almost guaranteed. If you want a leopard park, Yala is the more reliable first choice; choose Wilpattu if you prefer solitude and do not mind missing the leopard.
