Sri Lanka route guide · Hill country
Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka's cool "Little England", is a steady climb from Colombo through tea country. With a private driver you can stop at waterfalls and tea factories that buses and trains pass by.
The road heads east via Avissawella and Kitulgala, then climbs to Hatton and Talawakele before reaching Nuwara Eliya. The last 80 km are narrow mountain roads with many bends.
Best for: Tea country stays and travellers heading on to Horton Plains. Compare verified drivers, send a free request and pay the driver directly.
About 165 km, which takes 4.5 to 5 hours by car.
Not comfortably. Horton Plains is best at dawn, so plan it for the morning after you arrive.
