Sri Lanka route guide · Hill country
Colombo to Ella is one of the longest single drives most travellers make in Sri Lanka. A private car and driver saves the train ticket scramble, lets you leave when you like and stops wherever the views are best.
The usual road runs east through Avissawella and Ratnapura, then climbs through Balangoda and Haputale to Ella. An alternative takes the Southern Expressway towards Hambantota and climbs via Wellawaya; it is longer in kilometres but often similar in time.
Best for: Travellers starting in Colombo who want to reach the hill country in one day. Compare verified drivers, send a free request and pay the driver directly.
About 5.5 to 6.5 hours for roughly 210 km, plus stops. The hill roads after Balangoda are slow and winding.
The train takes 9 to 10 hours and seats sell out. A car is faster; many travellers drive to Nanu Oya or Haputale and ride only the most scenic train section.
A one-way transfer is usually in the range of a full day rate plus the driver's return. Compare prices from verified drivers on GoTourRide before you book.
