Sri Lanka and the Maldives in one trip

Adventure first, then barefoot rest. Colombo is about 1.5 hours from Malé by air, which makes this one of the easiest two-country trips in Asia. Here's how to plan it.

The short answer

  • Flights from Colombo to Malé take about 1.5 hours, with several departures every day.
  • December to April is the best time for both: dry in the Maldives and on Sri Lanka's south and west coasts.
  • Most people do Sri Lanka first, then the Maldives to rest. A good split is 7 to 10 days plus 4 or 5 nights.
  • Seaplanes to the resorts only fly in daylight, so time your flight from Colombo to land by early afternoon.

Why the two fit together so well

The Maldives is the dream beach holiday, but most people find that after four or five days of lagoon and snorkelling, they're ready for something else. Sri Lanka is the opposite: ancient cities, temples, tea mountains, safaris and a lot of movement. Put them together and you get a trip with a story and a rest at the end.

It also makes sense on cost. Maldives resorts are among the most expensive places to stay in the world, so swapping a few nights there for Sri Lanka's boutique hotels and guesthouses brings the average cost of the trip down a lot. And because many long-haul flights to the Maldives already route through Colombo, adding Sri Lanka is often easy.

When to go

The Maldives has a dry season from roughly December to April and a wetter, windier season from May to November. Sri Lanka's south and west coasts and the hill country follow almost the same pattern, so December to April is the classic window for the whole trip.

Travelling between May and September works too, with one change. Skip Sri Lanka's south coast and do the Cultural Triangle and the east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay) instead, which are dry and sunny at that time. The Maldives will be cheaper, with more chance of showers, but the water is still warm and the diving can be excellent.

  • December to April: the best time for both countries.
  • May to September: Sri Lanka's east coast and Cultural Triangle, plus lower Maldives prices.
  • October and November: changeable in both; good deals, but expect rain.
  • Christmas, New Year and Easter: book Maldives resorts many months ahead.

Which country first?

Most travellers do Sri Lanka first and finish in the Maldives. You arrive full of energy for the sightseeing and road trips, and you end with nothing to do but rest before the long flight home. It's also kinder to your luggage: you'll do your laundry in Sri Lanka, not at resort prices.

Doing the Maldives first makes sense if you're arriving after a very long flight and want to recover, or if your flight home leaves from Colombo. Either way works, and the flight between them is short.

Getting from Colombo to the Maldives

Flights from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) to Velana International Airport in Malé take about 1.5 hours. From Malé, resorts send guests by speedboat, seaplane or a short domestic flight, depending on how far away they are.

  • Seaplanes only fly in daylight. If your flight from Colombo lands in the evening, you may need a night near Malé airport.
  • Seaplanes have stricter luggage limits than airlines. Check with your resort before you pack.
  • Get to Colombo airport about 3 hours before an international flight. From the south coast, allow 3 to 3.5 hours by expressway.
  • Local islands with guesthouses are a cheaper option than resorts, but alcohol is not served on inhabited local islands.

Questions people ask

How long is the flight from Sri Lanka to the Maldives?

About 1.5 hours from Colombo (CMB) to Malé (MLE). There are several flights a day, so it is easy to fit around your plans.

How many days should I spend in Sri Lanka and the Maldives?

For a two-week trip, 9 or 10 days in Sri Lanka and 4 or 5 nights in the Maldives works well. With 10 days in total, do 6 or 7 days in Sri Lanka and 3 or 4 nights in the Maldives.

Is it cheaper to visit the Maldives from Sri Lanka?

Often, yes. Return flights between Colombo and Malé are usually reasonably priced, and replacing some resort nights with Sri Lankan hotels brings the overall cost of the trip down.

Should I do Sri Lanka or the Maldives first?

Most people do Sri Lanka first and finish in the Maldives to rest before the long flight home. Doing the Maldives first is better if you want to recover from a long-haul flight or your flight home leaves from Colombo.

Can a driver take me straight to the airport for my Maldives flight?

Yes. Your driver can plan the last day so you reach Colombo airport about 3 hours before your flight, from anywhere on the loop. From the south coast it's usually 3 to 3.5 hours by expressway.
