The best places for whale watching in Asia
Sri Lanka is one of the few places in the world where blue whales live close to shore all year. But the experience depends hugely on where you go, when, and which boat you choose.

The short answer
- Blue whales: Mirissa in Sri Lanka from about December to April, and Trincomalee from about March to August.
- Humpbacks: Okinawa's Kerama Islands in Japan from January to March.
- Sperm whales and huge dolphin pods: Kalpitiya in Sri Lanka from about November to March.
- The boat matters more than the place. Small, licensed operators who keep their distance give a far better, kinder trip than big boats in a crowd.
First, the honest bit about Mirissa
Mirissa is the most famous whale watching spot in Asia, and in season the chance of seeing a blue whale is genuinely good. But many travellers come back disappointed, and it's rarely because there were no whales.
The problem is crowding. On a busy morning in February, a dozen or more boats can end up around the same whale, some carrying more than fifty people. Boats that race to get close stress the animals and spoil the experience for everyone. If you've read reviews saying 'we regret it', that's usually what happened.
None of this means you should skip it. It means you should pick your boat carefully, go early in the season or on a weekday, and keep your expectations realistic: whales surface for a few minutes at a time, then dive. Here's what we tell our guests.
- Choose a smaller boat with a naturalist on board, even if it costs a little more.
- Ask how close they go. Good operators keep their distance and switch off or slow the engine near whales.
- Take seasickness tablets before you leave, not when you start feeling ill. The open sea can be rough.
- Boats usually leave between 6 and 7am and are out for 3 to 5 hours. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water.
- Dolphins, flying fish and turtles are common even on days when whales don't show.
Where to see whales in Asia
1Sri Lanka · December to April
Plan it with GoTourRideMirissa
The continental shelf drops steeply just off Sri Lanka's southern tip, and the shipping lane to the south is a feeding ground for blue whales. Sightings are most reliable from about December to April, when the sea is calm. You may also see sperm whales, Bryde's whales and spinner dolphins.
Stay a night or two in Mirissa, Weligama or near Galle so you're close to the harbour for the early start.

2Sri Lanka · about March to August
Plan it with GoTourRideTrincomalee
When the south coast's season ends, the whales are often seen off the east coast instead. Trincomalee has a deep natural harbour and far fewer boats than Mirissa, which makes for a calmer trip. Combine it with snorkelling at Pigeon Island and the beaches at Nilaveli.

A remote lagoon peninsula on the northwest coast, better known for kite surfing. Offshore, spinner dolphins gather in pods that can number in the hundreds, and sperm whales pass through in season. It's off the usual route, about three hours from the airport, which is part of its charm.

Japan · January to March
Okinawa and the Kerama Islands
Humpback whales come to the warm waters around Okinawa to breed and give birth in winter. Boats from Naha and the Kerama Islands see them regularly, and you might hear the males singing through the hull.

Ogasawara Islands
A remote island group about a day by ferry from Tokyo, with no airport. That distance is the point: the sea here has humpbacks in late winter and spring and sperm whales in summer, with very few other visitors. It's a commitment, but an extraordinary one.
- 24-hour ferry
- Very quiet

Hualien
Boats from Hualien on Taiwan's east coast see several species of dolphin on most trips in the warmer months, with occasional sperm whales and other whales further out. It's easy to combine with the marble gorges of Taroko.

The Gulf of Thailand
Few visitors know that Bryde's whales feed close to shore in the upper Gulf of Thailand, not far from Bangkok. Trips run in the months when the fish are near the coast, often in the second half of the year. Check sightings with local operators before you go.

Donsol
Strictly speaking, whale sharks are fish, not whales, but swimming beside one is a highlight for many people. Donsol's programme uses local spotters and rules about distance, which makes it a better choice than places where the sharks are hand-fed.

Planning around the seasons in Sri Lanka
If whales are the main reason for your trip, the month decides the coast. From December to April, base yourself on the south coast and go out from Mirissa. From about March to August, go to Trincomalee instead. In March and April, both can work, and that's often the sweet spot: good weather, and the busiest weeks are over.
Whale watching also fits naturally into a wider trip. Mirissa is a short drive from Galle and about three hours from Yala, so most people do it on the way between the hills, a safari and the beach.

Questions people ask
When is whale watching season in Sri Lanka?
Off Mirissa on the south coast, from about December to April. Off Trincomalee on the east coast, from about March to August. Sightings are never guaranteed, but these are the most reliable months.
Is whale watching in Mirissa worth it?
Usually, yes, if you choose a responsible operator and go in season. The most common complaint is crowding around the whales, so pick a smaller boat that keeps its distance and avoid the busiest weeks if you can.
Can you see blue whales in Sri Lanka?
Yes. Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to see blue whales, because they feed close to the coast. Mirissa and Trincomalee are the main departure points.
Is whale watching suitable for children?
For older children who cope well with boats, yes. Trips last 3 to 5 hours on the open sea, and it can be rough, so it's not ideal for toddlers or anyone prone to seasickness.
