Kitulgala: white-water rafting and canyoning

Kitulgala, on the Kelani River between Colombo and the hill country, is Sri Lanka's rafting capital. Trips follow rapids graded for beginners and families, with trained guides, helmets and life jackets provided. The surrounding rainforest also offers canyoning, waterfall walks and bird watching.

Season
Operates year-round; best conditions roughly January to April and July to September. Check river levels in late May–June and October–November
Typical cost
Roughly US$25 to US$40 per person for a standard 2-hour rafting trip; combination packages cost more
Difficulty
Beginner-friendly; no experience needed
Getting there
About 3 hours from Colombo; easy to combine with Nuwara Eliya
Tip
Wear a swimsuit and quick-dry clothes, bring a change of clothes and secure glasses with a strap

Hiking: Knuckles Range, Horton Plains and Ella

Knuckles Mountain Range

A UNESCO-listed range of cloud forest, grassland and waterfalls, the Knuckles offers multi-day treks, homestays in remote villages such as Meemure and some of the island's best views. Trails are poorly marked, so hire a local guide. Wear leech socks, especially after rain.

Horton Plains and World's End

This high plateau has a 9 km loop walk past Baker's Falls and the World's End cliff, with a sheer drop of nearly 900 metres. Start at dawn before cloud covers the view. Park fees for foreign visitors are relatively high and change, so check the current price before you go.

Ella: Little Adam's Peak, Ella Rock and Nine Arches

Little Adam's Peak is an easy walk of about an hour with tea-estate views. Ella Rock is a harder half-day climb with a steep finish, and is best done with a guide. The Nine Arches Bridge is a short walk from the village centre and a popular place to watch trains.

Adam's Peak: the night climb

Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) is a sacred mountain for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians. The most popular route, from Dalhousie (Nallathanniya), is about 5,500 steps. Climbers usually start around 1 to 2 am to reach the summit for sunrise, and the steps are lit with lanterns and lined with tea stalls during pilgrim season.

Season
Roughly December to May, from the Unduvap full moon to the Vesak full moon; January to March has the best weather
Duration
4 to 6 hours up, 2 to 3 hours down
Difficulty
Moderate to hard because of the steps, but suitable for most people with normal fitness
Tip
Bring warm layers for the top, a head torch, water and small notes for snacks, and avoid full-moon (Poya) nights if you dislike crowds

Surfing: Weligama, Midigama and Arugam Bay

Midigama / AhangamaIntermediate and advanced reef breaksRoughly November to April
HikkaduwaMixed breaks, surf and snorkelRoughly November to April

Lessons and board rentals are easy to arrange. Midigama and some south-coast reefs are best for experienced surfers because of shallow reef.

Kitesurfing in Kalpitiya

The Kalpitiya lagoon on the north-west coast has shallow, flat water and steady wind in the windy season (roughly May to October), which makes it a good place to learn. Schools offer beginner courses and gear rental, and experienced riders can head to open-water spots nearby. Combine it with dolphin watching and a night at an eco-lodge.

Whale watching, snorkelling and diving

Mirissa is the main whale-watching base, with blue whale and other sightings in season (roughly November to April). Premium catamaran trips run about US$100 to US$120 and standard boats cost less. Choose an operator that follows responsible viewing rules and keeps a sensible distance.

Hikkaduwa offers reefs and turtles for snorkelling and shallow diving on the south-west coast. On the east coast, Trincomalee and Pigeon Island National Park have clear water, coral and shipwreck dives in the calmer months, roughly May to September.

More adventures: trains, ziplines and balloons

  • Kandy to Ella train: one of the most scenic rail rides in the world, taking about 6.5 to 7 hours.
  • Ella zipline: a fast, short zipline over the valley, popular as a quick thrill.
  • Hot-air balloon at Dambulla: sunrise flights above Sigiriya and the lakes, an expensive splurge.
  • Bentota river safari: boat trips through mangroves to see monitor lizards and birds.
  • Tuk-tuk road trips: short self-drive tuk-tuk rental for local exploring (check licence and insurance rules).
  • Glamping: tented camps near Yala, Wilpattu and in the Knuckles for a wild-night experience.

Sigiriya, Pidurangala and Sinharaja: climbs and jungle walks

Sigiriya Rock is a climb of about 1,200 steps through gardens and up an exposed metal staircase to the summit, usually 1.5 to 2.5 hours for the round trip. Foreign ticket prices are roughly US$35 or more and change, so check the current fee. Pidurangala Rock next door is cheaper, has a scramble near the top and gives the best view of Sigiriya itself.

Sinharaja Rainforest in the south-west offers guided jungle trekking with birds and endemic wildlife. Expect mud, humidity and leeches, and book a guide at the park entrance.

Bentota and the west coast: water sports

Bentota is the island's water-sports centre: jet skis, banana boats, windsurfing and calm-water paddling on the Bentota river and lagoon. A mangrove river safari takes about 1 to 2 hours and often includes sightings of monitor lizards, kingfishers and other birds. It is a gentle option for families.

  • Check recent reviews and look for mention of safety briefings and trained guides.

  • Check cancellation rules in case of weather or high river levels.
  • Ask your driver or guesthouse for a recommendation, since local knowledge is often the best filter.

Responsible adventure travel

Plan your adventure trip with a local driver

A driver handles the early starts, remote trailheads and transfers between activity bases so you can save your energy for the activity itself. Compare licensed drivers and vehicles on GoTourRide, and read how to hire a private driver in Sri Lanka.
