Ella, known for Nine Arch Bridge and mountain walks, is 8 to 9.5 hours from Trincomalee by car. Many travellers break the drive in Polonnaruwa.
The last part of the drive climbs into the hills towards Ella, which is slow and winding, so allow extra time in rain or mist.
The route crosses the island between the east coast and the interior; watch for elephants crossing in the dry zone, especially at dusk.
